Gardening Tips Straight From a Non-Gardener

Welcome to the 7thAnnual Authors in Bloom Blog Hop! Anyone who knows me is shaking their head at the thought of gaining gardening tips from a woman who is well known for her black thumb. A shocking thought when surrounded by parents who grow lush lavish gardens and gorgeous flowers, and a few siblings who have followed this path. But I’ve discussed my lack of gardening skills in the past right here, but that doesn’t mean I might not still have something to share with you.

What Tips Would a Non-Gardener Provide?

Well, most likely, not very good ones. Although I still insist that the story from years ago about me watering a fake plant were false.(Or that it must’ve been a very convincing looking fake plant.) But if you’re like me and could sustain yourself on fruit and vegetables alone, if necessary, you need to keep these tips in mind.

  • tomatoesMake sure you have family, or good friends, who are skilled at gardening. My father, and Father in law, keep me stocked with vegetables all summer and my favorite is the garden tomato. I discuss my envy and admiration for those who have a green thumb right here.
  • Buy a big freezer to stock up all the summer goodness when the weather gets cold, or when you can buy in bulk at the store
  • Share your appreciation of the goods you’ve gained from the garden by having your husband make some spook-tacular delicious salsa . The recipe is below—I told you I’d share something with you, and believe me. This salsa is well worth it! But garden tomatoes are really the key ingredient to making it so awesome in my opinion! But then again, I am a little obsessed with garden tomatoes.
  • If you can’t grow them, or keep them alive, then do what you do best and write a little flash fiction story about tomatoes- like I did, right here.

A Recipe With Your Garden Goods

gardeningIf you’re able to get your claws on garden tomatoes freshly ripped from the vine, you’ll be frightened at just what you might be willing to do to obtain this salsa that I originally shared on Sophia Kimble’s fabulous blog.

You’ll scream out how delicious this is as blood red ripe tomato juice trickles down your chin.   Include enough garlic to keep the vampires at bay.

Scary good Salsa

  • 4-5 ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • ¼ red onion, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, minced –more if you like it devilishly hot
  • 8 cilantro sprigs, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced –vampires may want to omit this
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Combine all ingredients together in a mixing bowl (or your cauldron). Let stand at least 15 minutes before serving.

  1. Every summer I make a huge veggie garden and I do all the pickling and canning as well…makes me feel like Little House on the Prairie! lol I usually have quite the bounty of tomatoes and make canned stewed tomatoes as well as salsa:) Thank you for the salsa recipe, I’ve copied it and will print it out!! One of the gardening tips I have is to keep any eggshells, crush them and spread them around plants…not only will it give the plant calcium but will also prevent certain pests from attacking the plant. 1. Thanks Carole! I need all the tips I can get. Much appreciated- and thanks for visiting!

  3. Thank you for the salsa recipe! I wish I did garden but have never lived anywhere that I had the space. I do plant tomatoes in a large pot and sometimes it does well and sometimes not so well! I absolutely love fresh tomatoes and really small butter beans and almost anything fresh from the garden. Look forward to hearing more from your newsletter!

    1. I think butter beans are delicious too. I don’t know anyone who grows them, hmmm, I’ll need to work on convincing my gardening people. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. My favorite thing to eat fresh from the garden, so fresh you don’t leave the garden to eat it, is melons. when you’ve been working out there in the hot sun for a few hours and you bust open that juicy goodness on a break! There’s just nothing like it.

    1. Although I’ve admitted I’m no gardener, I hear the complaints about the weather not cooperating lately for this summer. I have my fingers crossed that it won’t impact my ‘tomato crop’. Thanks for stopping by!

  5. I don’t eat salsa (I’m a wimp about peppery things) but I love tomatoes fresh from the garden. They definitely taste different from the store-bought ones. Thanks for the giveaway.

    1. No spicy stuff for me either! My hubs loves it hot, but he is nice enough to make it mild so I can enjoy it. Thanks for visiting!
