I Got the Music in Me

Welcome to this week’s Marketing for Romance Writers 52-week Blog Challenge entitled, My Theme Song. Oh, I’ve got one. Actually, more than one. In fact, those sayings about people who are about 99 percent song lyrics—yep that’s me.

It took me a long time to realize that everyone doesn’t have music playing almost all the time (except when I’m writing, then it’s too distracting). Or that everyone wasn’t kept awake from a song playing in their head, or has had one wake you up in the morning when you can’t shut it off in your mind. That perhaps everyone didn’t consider any room as a potential dance floor if the right song came on.

So, a theme song? Oh yeah.

Name That Tune

Scruff, dog, pet
Scruff likes music, but hates when Mom tries to dance with him.

I missed my chance to be a television superstar on the old show Name That Tune. (Pretty sure it was the final music theme songseason—I’m not that old, lol.)

I’d play along at home and was sure if given the opportunity, I could name that tune in one note…sometimes.

Needless to say, I love all kinds of music. I’ve went on about this before (right here), so I won’t rehash that.

Imagine if our world were like the movies and the song playing could help to inspire us, or allow the other people around us to discern our mood. I suppose it could get a bit noisy, but in my mind that’s all kinds of awesome!

Because there’s usually a song playing amongst the chatter of my mind that I’m trying to ignore to focus on my characters. (So if I’m talking to you, I’m probably also listening to a song. I multi-task like that 😉 It can be triggered by a mood, when someone says a word that pulls me into a song, or for reasons unbeknownst to me. All I know is that music is a wonderful way to help improve my mood.

My Theme Song

Choosing one theme song was a challenge—especially because this gal grew up in the music video era and knows it’s best to avoid YouTube if I don’t want my day sucked away. But I made an exception for a bit today.

Depending on my mood or what I’m doing, a different #song might be considered as the theme for the day. #MFRW #amwriting Share on X

Although there is one personal theme song that I go back to time and time again. It’s my writing theme song. The lyrics take me to my chair in the early mornings as I’m up before the sun, toiling away on the computer. Or when it’s late in the evening and I’m taking my laptop with me to write more instead of relaxing and letting my mind rest. I can’t, because I’m Working on a Dream (Bruce Springsteen).

Other Potential Theme Songs

Here are a few other runners up for potential theme songs.

When I need a little inspiration to ignite the fire for inspiration, The Light, by Disturbed touches my heart every time.

When I feel a little frustrated by the marathon length of time and dedication that writing, and waiting for the completion and release book after book, I remind myself of the journey and that I’m going The Distance- Cake.

You may have heard me lament about my frustrations when I have problems with my history of back injuries and migraines. I don’t do well standing still, because I always Wanna Get Better- The Bleachers

  1. Right this minute, while insomnia has it’s deep claws in my brain…”Cool Change” by Little River Band is playing in my head, begging for some relaxation sailing the ocean without a care in the world.

    Would be so nice.

Awesome post…the song in my head when I wake up (also always have something playing) sets the tone for the day. Hate it when Pink’s “Blow Me” is in there!

    1. Oh, I haven’t heard Cool Change in so long- great song! Today I woke up with “She Used to Be Mine” by Sara Bareilles .
      lol about the Pink song!

  2. interesting list. There are times when a single note triggers a song that won’t leave. Note to self: never go to the Small World Exhibit, the song never leaves. 🙂

  3. As someone who constantly has music in her head, I could not, for the life of me, come up with one ‘theme song’ to describe me! I think you just hit the nail on the head….”I got the music in me….I got the music in me….I got the music in me, yeah yeah yeah….”

    LMAO!
